career fair

Central Career Fair was held in the small gym on Friday, January 20 from 9 am - 11 am. This year's lineup was broadened to include representatives from a wide variety of career fields, with the aim of having something to offer to all Central students grades 6-12.

"We have some nice variety and there should be something for everyone," said organizer Jim Mesik, Central AG and Shop teacher who arranged for more than 20 local businesses to attend including Bongards, Sackett-Waconia, NYA Fire Dept., Iron River Construction, WM Mueller and Sons, United Farmers Coop, Modern Design, Lano Eq., The Harbor/The Haven, Crown College education rep, National Guard, Rice Companies, Citizens State Bank, Children of Tomorrow, Tangletown Gardens, Vos Construction, Xtreme Electric, Jonaco Machining, Crown Doors, Ridgeview Medical, City of NYA, Beacon Hill Staffing, and Carver County Sheriff Dept.

Students were encouraged to visit, and have conversations with business representatives. Suggested questions to ask businesses/organizations were:

  • What skills or qualifications are you looking for in employees?
  • What are some pros and cons to your profession?
  • If I pursue a career in your field, how likely am I to find employment?
  • What does the future of your industry look like?
  • How much money could I make working in your industry?

Among the goals for the Career Fair is to have each student spend some length of time visiting with representatives. High schoolers are the primary target audience, but middle school students are encouraged to attend as well.

"It's never too soon to start thinking about the future."
